As a learning community, Crotched Mountain School offers individualized education programs and enriching educational experiences for students with disabilities at learning levels pre-K-12.
Student-centered education programs Crotched Mountain School is a NH-approved special education school, with students who perform on a wide range of learning levels. Their individualized educational program may include everything from basic communication skills and activities of daily living, to functional academics or course work leading to a high school diploma.
Our experienced staff and low staff-to-student ratios allow us to accommodate many learning levels and learning styles. We create small, personalized learning environments with six to eight students in a typical classroom. Within our 17 homeroom classrooms, children are closely matched based on their age and developmental levels. This creates an individualized learning environment where students can succeed.
Thoughtful person-centered planning and IEPs
At Crotched Mountain School, we develop a person-centered plan to complement the individualized education plan (IEP). This plan guides and supports students through their school experience and into adult community services so that each child can reach his or her full potential.
Both plans are developed with a team consisting of Crotched Mountain School service coordinators, teaching professionals, learning specialists, the student, the student's family, the school district, and other professionals as needed. Because our team members are on our campus, we meet regularly to adjust these two plans as our students learn, develop and grow.
Enriched curriculum expands horizons Our curriculum follows the New Hampshire frameworks. We customize and refine our teaching methods to ensure that all children can access required topics at their own level in areas including language arts, history, math and science. Students who meet state standards are awarded an accredited high school diploma at Crotched Mountain School.
Students are encouraged to explore areas of interest and invest in their own learning. Academic lessons and skill-building activities are woven into the curriculum throughout the day and can include:
-
The Arts: Music, dance, performing arts and visual arts are a vibrant part of the school experience enjoyed by students.
-
Vocational Exploration and Skills Center: Job training on campus and in the community nurtures students' personal and job-related skills. The Crotched Mountain Skills Center lets students explore materials management, recycling, mail sorting and delivery, and hospitality as well as other vocational opportunities.
-
Sunnyfield Farm: Our 60-acre organic farm gives students access to multiple experiences in farming including feeding and caring for animals, planting, tending and harvesting gardens, and general maintenance tasks. Here, students can connect directly with the natural processes and systems that support our larger community in a distinct vocational setting.
In addition to the enriching activities incorporated into the school day, we offer a variety of engaging student activities throughout the week and weekend.
Connections with families Families are encouraged to be an active part of their student's life at Crotched Mountain School, including classroom visits, overnight stays and activities such as the school play, talent show, science fair, athletic events, Sunday family swims and Fall Festival. Teachers, service coordinators, therapists, residential staff, medical staff and students themselves are in frequent contact with families via e-mail and telephone to share updates on academic progress and personal growth. |

"Crotched Mountain saved my son. Before, he was non-verbal and violent and now he is completely verbal and just got his first job. He has grown into the person he was always meant to be, a young man with all the opportunities of people without disabilities." - Kelly, St. Jean, parent
