Compassionate care of students with disabilities

Many students at Crotched Mountain School have special health care needs that require attention during the school day and after school hours. Depending on the level of need, students access expert medical care through our school nurse, health center and hospital. W. Carl Cooley, MD, medical director of Crotched Mountain, medical director of the
Center for Medical Home Improvement and adjunct professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School, directs the care provided by our on-staff physicians, certified nurses and psychiatrists, including an onsite child psychiatrist.

Onsite specialty medical care
The school's Health Center is a licensed health care facility. Situated in the center of campus, students can receive their daily medications and undergo lab testing. Our nurses visit residential students in the evenings and on weekends to administer medications and assess their health.

The Health Center's certified medical staff monitors health issues, tracks medications and responds to signs of illness or injury. Our team works with physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, occupational and physical therapists and other professionals in managing students' overall health needs. Parents and guardians are also active members of their child's health care team.

For medically fragile students and those with chronic health conditions, the Crotched Mountain Specialty Hospital provides expert 24-hour medical care and can support the student's residential program.

Rehabilitation therapies reinforce new skills
Therapy is woven into many areas of a student's life at Crotched Mountain. Psychologists and therapists trained in physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy work in concert with our teachers and residential staff to integrate therapeutic supports into each student's education program.

Skills learned during therapy sessions are reinforced during academic activities, social interactions and recreation experiences during the day. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves and expand their skills in a fully supportive environment.

Assistive technology enhances learning
Crotched Mountain School's onsite assistive technology support works in tandem with our therapies to develop solutions to multiple challenges students face. Our certified assistive technology experts assess students' needs, recommend products and create custom solutions. Through these supports, we position students to learn and to maximize the benefits of their therapies. Our offerings include:

  • low-tech to high-tech communications solutions
  • individualized therapeutic seating
  • voice-activated and switched environmental controls
  • manual and powered mobility tools
  • daily living supports for improved access and safety
  • timely onsite equipment repair

"The availability of a Specialty Hospital on campus has made it easier, faster, and more comfortable for our son to receive the acute medical attention that he sometimes needs. It eases our minds as well that he is with people who know and care about himif he is hospitalized when we cannot immediately be with him."

"To me, therapies are important because they allow me to be myself and help me reach my goal of becoming more independent both physically and personally.  The sky is the limit!"

- Chelsea Fernandes, Student
