Assistive Technology Services
When a person has a disability, finding the right assistive technology solution can make all the difference. Formerly NH-ATEC, our highly specialized clinical program provides assistive technology evaluation and consultation services to children and adults who experience an accessibility challenge. We support people with complex medical, physical, sensory, cognitive and communications needs in achieving their personal goals at work, home, school or play.
Our highly specialized clinicians recommend assistive technology solutions in the following areas:
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) solutions can help people with limited or no speech to break through communication barriers and express themselves. Our highly experienced speech-language pathologists (SLPs) identify and develop AAC strategies to promote functional communication.
Supported typing is a method of accessing Augmentative Alternative Communication systems and assistive technologies that benefits people of all ages and abilities who need assistance in controlling body movement in order to type or point, with the goal of independent typing.
Access and Independent Living
When people with complex physical challenges have difficulty controlling aspects of their environment, a variety of aids and environmental modifications can ensure access. Our team of experienced physical and occupational therapists evaluate needs at home, school and work. They provide recommendations for a variety of aids and solutions.
Seating and Wheeled Mobility
Choosing the right wheelchair and setting it up properly are key components in optimizing a person’s health, comfort and function and avoiding serious complications such as pressure ulcers. Our team of experienced occupational therapists and technicians evaluate and recommend the most appropriate power and manual wheelchairs and seating systems to meet each individual’s unique needs.
Through computers, people of all abilities can participate more fully in many aspects of life. Most activities such as shopping, paying bills, finding information, keeping in touch with family and friends are easier and less expensive to do on the Internet than in person or by phone. Our occupational therapists are expert at providing thorough, thoughtful evaluations to identify the computer hardware and software solutions that promote access to education, employment and social networking opportunities.
