A hallmark of Crotched Mountain’s programming is the integration of arts into education and rehabilitation. We’ve seen proof that the arts can play a transformational role in healing, forging community, expressing ideas and achieving independence.
The Crotched Mountain Healing Arts Program brings local, regional and national artists to the Greenfield campus and other Crotched Mountain locations for short and long- term artist residencies in a variety of artistic disciplines. Art making provides many opportunities for learning new skills, encouraging self expression and improving self confidence. Visiting artists design workshops for both Crotched Mountain School students and Specialty Hospital patients. Individual instruction, group activities and culminating performances or exhibitions are part of each residency and have led to continued art making in school classrooms, hospital settings and upon discharge to home or the community.
Artists who visit and work at Crotched Mountain also benefit from their experience here. Many have told us that making art here has transformed their lives and their artwork. They’ve been inspired by the efforts and creativity of the CM students and patients and the devotion of CM staff. Many visiting artists leave with the intent to continue making art with people with disabilities; some have said they were going to change their career direction to include caring for people with disabilities and all have said they felt a new purpose for their art making. Artist residencies are a strong example of a community of mutual support.

Current Artist Residencies
Ongoing Art Clubs
Some artist residencies have proven to be so successful they have been established as weekly or bi-weekly workshops led by local artists. The consistency of these programs fosters close relationships between the artists and the CM students and clients and often creates lifelong artistic pursuits. Our current clubs include:
Community Performance Art
We are also pleased to host a variety of concerts and performances by visiting performing arts groups. The generosity of these groups makes it possible for CM clients and students to experience world class music, dance, theatre and more. Our appreciation goes to: The Peterborough Players, The San Francisco Guitar Quartet, Annimatera, Monadnock Music, Mary DesRosier, The Walden School Players, The Brew, Kites Over New England and more!
