Crotched Mountain School's New Program for Children with Severe Emotional Challenges

The statistics on children in New Hampshire with emotional disturbances are sobering. Nearly 10,000 children in this state are estimated to have a serious emotional disturbance, characterized by a high level of functional impairment. According to the most recent data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), we are one of ten states with the highest incidents of Major Depressive Episode among youth 12 to 17 years of age.

"Crotched Mountain has experienced an increase in the number of applicants to our school with severe emotional challenges," said Donald L. Shumway, President and CEO of Crotched Mountain Foundation. "This has led us to develop a new school program featuring a residential treatment model to meet their specific health, treatment and education needs, with a focus on successful reunification with family and reintegration into the community."

Our new program, called Cedar's Point, is open to boys and girls ages 13-19 with diagnostic profiles including severe mental illness, learning disabilities and challenging behaviors. On average, we expect that participants will be enrolled in the program for 6 to 12 months.

This expanded treatment capacity builds on Crotched Mountain's 50 year history in serving populations with significant challenges in our school, hospital and residences. We provide a safe, structured and secure residential environment for children to receive medical care, psychological care, therapeutic treatments and education. Our family-driven and person-centered approach focuses on a return to family and community.

As a leader in positive behavior supports, we offer alternatives to the use of intrusive behavioral interventions through the utilization of the Mandt System(R), Gentle Teaching, and strong post-behavioral supports. Our collaborative and relationship-based problem solving approach uncovers the underlying reasons behind a child's behavior, allowing us to build scheduled, structured interventions and activities to meet that child's specific needs. In addition, occupational therapy with a focus on sensory integration is a significant component of the Cedar's Point program.

Located in the beautiful New Hampshire countryside, our 1,400 acre campus boasts a wide range of resources including a recreational pool, lakeside beach, hiking trails, gymnasium, bowling alley and media center - to name a few.  Our team of rehabilitation and educational professionals are able to draw upon our campus and community-based resources as they develop individualized programs for each child.

While in the program participants can receive high school credits toward their diploma at
Crotched Mountain School or attend local schools for credits. They can also learn
responsible work behaviors through vocational development and exposure to varied on-campus professions in a genuine workplace environment.

During the transition process, families spend a weekend on our campus to prepare for reunification. During this time, we provide families and children with the education and role modeling necessary to make a successful transition to home and community.
