The New Bag of Tricks in Assistive Technology 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
How With roughly 100 new off-the-shelf apps added every day, an educator's bag of tricks is overflowing with choices. But which will work best? A fraction of these apps were actually created for individuals with special needs, yet many are a perfect match. In this full day hands-on seminar, our assistive technology specialists will help you identify apps that will increase independence and aid communication, social skills, fine motor development, literacy and visual schedules. We'll discuss capability and access strategies for individuals with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, CVI, stroke and developmental disability.   More...

4/17/12 Social Stories and Video Modeling 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
How do we enhance comprehension of language and the interpretation of social interactions? How do we teach skills and promote independence? This hands-on workshop will review iApps used for social stories and video modeling. Developer of Social Stories™, Carol Gray, states that a " A Social Story™ describes a situation, skill, or concept in terms of relevant social cues, perspectives, and common responses in a specifically defined style and format." Video modeling is used by many educators and service providers as a way to teach desired behaviors using a video demonstration. Practical guidelines for developing social stories and videos for video modeling to meet individual needs will be discussed and demonstrated.  More...

5/8/12 Introduction to Wheeled Mobility and Seating 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
How does one know what type of wheelchair is appropriate for a person with a specific disability? With so many choices of mobility bases and seating systems, how can a clinician even know where to start? A wheelchair is more than just a means of mobility, it is an extension of the person. It is critical that the seating components meet postural support and pressure redistribution needs, as well as enable the user to complete his/her Mobility-Related Activities of Daily Living. In short, a wheelchair should promote health, comfort and function. This course provides hands-on instruction on how to perform a seating and mobility evaluation, introduces participants to the various classifications of both manual and power wheelchairs, provides the opportunity to experience wheelchair and seating products from a multitude of manufacturers, provides an overview of interface pressure mapping, and summarizes the documentation process for generating a letter of medical necessity. More...

5/22/12 Articulation and Fluency 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

6/14/12 Documentation and Generating Letters of Medical Necessity
8:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Federal Medicare and NH Medicaid guidelines require that specific information be provided when submitting a wheelchair letter of medical necessity (LMN) for funding consideration. It is incumbent on the evaluator to understand the criteria for submission of the LMN so that the insurance approval process is efficient and the client has the best opportunity for a fair and informed funding review of their seating and mobility needs. The funding approval process is optimized when the evaluator understands the documentation criteria and how the wording of the justification impacts the decision to fund (or not) the recommended wheelchair. This course provides the necessary information to generate an LMN (or Wheelchair Evaluation report) that meets the guidelines required by key funding sources. More...

7/17/12 What's Next? iApps for Visual Schedules, Supports and Reminders
8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Most of us use visual supports every day ...cookbooks, maps, calendars, and lists, to process, organize and plan activities. With the advancements in mobile devices, iApps for visual supports are quickly becoming a mainstay in all our lives. For people with a disability, visual supports not only organize a sequence of events, they can enhance the individual's ability to understand, anticipate and participate. During this hands-on seminar, attendees will learn how to create a variety of visual supports using the iPad and iPod Touch including: step by step task completion, mind mapping, daily schedules and project planning. More...

9/19/12 Specialized Power Wheelchair Electronics: Alternative Access Methods
for Drive Control 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Therapists often make recommendations to modify the environment to enhance the functional performance of persons with disabilities. However, enhancing functional mobility (moving from one place to another during the performance of everyday activities), is also critical to optimizing independence. Many persons who cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair may also face challenges driving a power wheelchair secondary to limited range of motion, strength, or motor control. For these clients, alternative drive access should be considered. This course introduces various alternative access methods and provides attendees the opportunity to use specialty controls/electronics that enable wheelchair users to regain or improve independence in mobility. More...

It is not unusual for individuals who have autism to present unique and all too often complex challenges. Luckily there are thousands of iApps available for people with special needs, but how does one manage to review, evaluate and identify the features and benefits that are appropriate for the individual we are supporting? This hands-on seminar will preview many popular iApps and share what therapists and parents are finding useful in promoting communication, social interaction, organization, and behavior monitoring. More...
