Crotched Mountain's Recycling Program Reports Surprising Results

3/18/2009 - Greenfield, NH

Share

Crotched Mountain's recycling program has done extremely well over the past 9 months. Since the beginning of July, our recycling program has processed and sold an average of 1.63 tons of recyclables per week. This translates into 52.43 tons of paper, scrap metal, and mixed containers recycled per year.

Despite the failing markets for recyclables, we have earned revenues averaging $142.40 per week with a net revenue of $4,556.96 for the year.

Had those 52.43 tons of recycled material been disposed as trash at the current rate of $115 per ton, the cost to Crotched Mountain would have been $6,029.45. This means that instead of paying a bill of over $6,000 to dispose of our trash, we actually made over $4,000 by recycling.

Here is how our recycling habits have positively effected the environment:

  • 32.34 tons recycled paper = 599 trees saved
  • 13.09 tons recycled scrap metal = 13,456 lbs of coal saved

We can't put a price tag on the vocational value of Crotched Mountain 's recycling. However, we know that the daily participation of Day Program students, Career Development, Crotched Mountain School Students and Brain Injury clients contributes to the success of our recycling program.
